Former England captain Michael Vaughan has warned Ben Stokes he needs to change his lifestyle after the England all-rounder was arrested following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub in the early hours of Monday morning.
The 26-year-old was held overnight by police on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.
Test Match Special pundit Vaughan, writing in his Daily Telegraph column, said England's Test vice-captain needs to find alternative ways of letting off steam and must become as "streetwise" off the pitch as he is on it.
"Ben Stokes can't say he was not warned," said Vaughan.
"I have been privy to private conversations about him recently and he has been given strong warnings about his lifestyle.
"People have said to him there is only one person who can ruin your career and that is you. Nobody else."
Stokes is likely to be named in England's squad for the Ashes tour of Australia on Wednesday.
He became the Indian Premier League's most expensive foreign player when Rising Pune Supergiant bought him for £1.7m in February.
"He has the talent, plays all three formats relatively easily, and has the world at his feet," added Vaughan.
"In time we could be describing him as a cricketing genius. But he has to understand that if he wants to be a superstar, and go over to India, earn huge IPL contracts and keep them, he has to be careful off the field.
"I am not saying be teetotal or not have a flutter at the casino. He needs a way to let off steam and live a life.
"But on the field he is a streetwise cricketer. He understands the game. He gets cricket. But he is not streetwise off the pitch and that could be his downfall. I am hoping this is his lesson."

Stokes was sent home from an England Lions tour for late-night drinking in 2013, while in 2014 he missed the World T20 after breaking his hand when punching a dressing-room locker in frustration at a poor run of form.
The recent incident occurred at about 02:35 BST at Bristol's Mbargo club which left another man needing hospital treatment for facial injuries.
Stokes will not be available for England's fourth one-day international against West Indies on Wednesday, the England and Wales Cricket Board has announced.
Team-mate Alex Hales, who was with Stokes on Monday, will also miss the match and has returned to Bristol to help police.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says his side need to be more "clinical" after the Reds were held to a frustrating Champions League draw despite dominating Spartak Moscow in Russia.
Spartak went ahead against the run of play when Loris Karius was easily beaten by Fernando's free-kick after Philippe Coutinho's foul just outside the area.
Klopp fielded forwards Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Coutinho in the same game for the first time, and the latter two combined for Coutinho to equalise with his first Champions League goal.
Firmino, Mane and substitute Daniel Sturridge spurned good chances as Liverpool were forced to settle for a second successive draw in Group E.
"We have to be more clinical - 100%," said Klopp, whose side are two points behind group leaders Sevilla, who beat Maribor 3-0 in Spain.
"To create all those chances and only score one goal feels average. It was a crazy game.
"What can I say? We created, created and created. Where is the real point for criticism? We tried with all we had. The effort was great."
Reds not ruthless enough despite 'Fab Four'
Liverpool were the better side throughout and peppered the Spartak goal with 16 shots, yet they remain without an away victory in Europe's most prestigious competition since 2009.
For once, their failure to win a game had nothing to do with the defence.
With Mane back from a three-match suspension, Klopp opted to start with his four most potent attacking players and this will surely feel like two points dropped for the manager.
As exciting as the Reds were going forward, they were guilty of spurning chance after chance.
By the time Sturridge volleyed over from close range in the 90th minute, unmarked Firmino had headed a good chance at Artem Rebrov, while Mane fired another chance straight at the Spartak goalkeeper.
The equaliser was well worked, Coutinho sweeping powerfully home from an angle after Mane had returned his pass to split the Russian defence and silence the home crowd.
Yet even after Sturridge's miss, Salah was denied by a brilliant, one-handed save by substitute keeper Aleksandr Selikhove in the 96th minute after Rebrov had earlier been injured saving from the Egypt international.
Is Klopp right to change keepers?
Liverpool named their third different goalkeeper in as many matches - yet they still only have two clean sheets in 11 games this season.
After Danny Ward played in the Carabao Cup defeat at Leicester last week, Klopp recalled Karius in Moscow despite Simon Mignolet saving a penalty in Liverpool's Premier League win over the Foxes on Saturday.
Spartak rarely threatened but Karius could have done better for the goal which put the hosts ahead with their first serious chance.
Emre Can was caught in possession inside his own half, forcing Coutinho to concede a free-kick outside the area, and Fernando curled the set-piece over the wall and beyond Karius - though the effort did not find the corner.
The German did beat away Andrey Yeshchenko's fierce strike after the interval but the debate will continue over whether Klopp is right to rotate his keepers.
Karius has conceded 19 goals in his 19 appearances for Liverpool in all competitions.

Champions League draw specialists - the stats
    Liverpool have drawn four consecutive Champions League games for the first time since March 2002.
    The Reds extended their longest winless run in the Champions League to seven games - losing three - having last won in September 2014 against Ludogorets.
    Coutinho has now scored nine goals in his past 14 appearances for Liverpool.
    Liverpool have not kept a clean sheet in the Champions League since November 2009 against Debrecen, conceding in their past nine games.

Liverpool have two big Premier League games before their next Champions League game against Maribor in Slovenia on 17 October (19:45 BST) - Newcastle away on Sunday (16:30) and Manchester United at Anfield on 14 October (12:30).

Harry Kane scored a hat-trick as Tottenham maintained their 100% start in the Champions League with victory over Apoel Nicosia.
Kane - who also scored twice in Spurs' opening win over Borussia Dortmund - put his side ahead in the 39th minute, slotting into the bottom-left corner from Toby Alderweireld's pass.
The England striker then calmly stroked in Moussa Sissoko's cross from the edge of the penalty area in the 62nd minute to double the lead.
He completed his hat-trick five minutes later with a header into the bottom corner.
Kane's three goals were Tottenham's first three shots on target in the match, and Mauricio Pochettino's side had earlier rode their luck at times.
Apoel hit the crossbar through Igor de Camargo's fierce shot in the 19th minute, while Hugo Lloris was forced into two smart saves after the break with the score 1-0.
But Kane's clinical performance was the difference and he has now scored six hat-tricks in 2017 and five goals in the Champions League this season.
The win takes Tottenham level on points with Real Madrid at the top of Group H and importantly six points clear of Borussia Dortmund who lost at home against Real.
Kane inspires depleted Spurs
Tottenham were without key players Dele Alli and Jan Vertonghen through suspension, as well as the ill Christian Eriksen, for their trip to Cyprus but Kane ensured Spurs did not slip up against the side expected to be the weakest in the group.
His hat-trick was a 'perfect' one - his first goal coming with his left foot, the second his right foot and third with his head.
Although different in their finishes, Kane's goals were alike in the way he showed uncanny composure to score from Spurs' only clear chances on the night.
There has been plenty of debate as to whether Kane is 'world class' but he has now scored six goals in his past four games in Europe's elite club competition.
The England striker has also scored 11 goals for club and country this month, having failed to score in August.
After the match he rightfully paid tribute to the excellent delivery for each of his goals from Alderweireld, Sissoko and Kieran Trippier, but this was Kane's night.
Improved Spurs strongly placed in Group B
Last season's Champions League campaign was one of frustration for Spurs as they finished third behind Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen and only won two of their six matches.
But this season Tottenham have as many wins in two matches and sit in prime position in the group as they look to reach the knockout stage for the first time since 2010-11.
They now face back-to-back champions Real Madrid in consecutive games, firstly at the Bernabeu on 17 October, but importantly have a six-point cushion over Borussia Dortmund.
Spurs still have to travel to Dortmund to play the current Bundesliga leaders but they will do so knowing they would likely progress with a draw at Westfalenstadion, were they to repeat their victory over Apoel at home.
The north London club have an identical record to Real Madrid after two games and, with Kane in his current form, may well fancy their chances against a side who have only taken 11 points from 18 in La Liga.
It was must-win - Pochettino
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino: "It was a tough game. They were very motivated. It was important to get three points. It was a must-win and we were fantastic. Today there were some good performances from players who are not regulars and a hat-trick for Harry Kane, it was a fantastic performance.
"I am happy because in some games maybe we dominate and create lot of chances and cannot score. Tonight we were clinical in front of goal."
Kane's incredible 2017 - the best stats
    Harry Kane has now scored 34 goals in 30 competitive appearances for Tottenham in 2017.
    Following this goal, Kane has now scored against 46 different opponents during his club career and versus 36 different teams for Tottenham in all competitions.
    Kane has now scored in four successive Champions League appearances - only the second English player to do this in the competition after Steven Gerrard (five in a row).
    His treble means that he has scored six hat-tricks in 2017 alone and nine in his whole career - all for Spurs.
    He is the seventh different English player to score a Champions League hat-trick (after Cole, Newell, Owen, Rooney, Shearer, Welbeck).
    Tottenham have won their opening two games of a Champions League campaign for the first time.

Somerset took a big step towards avoiding relegation from Division One as they dominated day two at Taunton, taking a 253-run lead over Middlesex.
The hosts, who need to win to have a chance of avoiding the drop, dismissed Middlesex for 142, with Jack Leach (4-54) and Craig Overton (3-7) starring.
James Hildreth (82 not out) put on 100 with Tom Abell (34 not out) as Somerset recovered to reach 159-3.
Should Middlesex lose they will go down if Hampshire beat Warwickshire.
Middlesex began the day on 18-3 knowing that if they could reach 250 within the first 110 overs they would take the two batting bonus points they needed to reach 148 points - one point more than Somerset, on 127, could reach with a 20-point win.
But any thought of reaching that target evaporated quickly as off-spinner Dom Bess had Adam Voges caught and then ran out John Simpson to leave the visitors reeling on 22-5.
Dawid Malan (38) and Paul Stirling (41) stalled Somerset's advances, but both fell to the left-arm spin of Leach, before tail-end contributions from James Harris (19) and Tim Murtagh (14) got them to 142 - a first innings deficit of 94.
Somerset initially faltered in their second innings, with Ed Byrom and George Bartlett falling for single figures, but Hildreth's brilliant innings and Abell's resolve saw them reach a commanding lead.
Middlesex's hopes may now lie at Edgbaston, where they need already-relegated Warwickshire to beat sixth-placed Hampshire to relegate them instead.
Somerset batsman James Hildreth:
"I have played better and got a hundred on a juicy wicket at Scarborough. But, in the context of the season and for the team, this is easily the best.
"There is still enough spin out there. If you put the ball in the right areas there is enough going on, but, if you go into a game with the mindset that it's going to spin or be a bad wicket to bat on then sometimes it's not a great way to approach things.
"I believe you have always got to be positive and look for ways of scoring runs rather than worrying about surfaces. Malan and Stirling were proactive and got runs that they deserved.
"If you get yourself in and play in the right way then the wicket is a good test for the batsmen to play on. Its a great challenge but if you apply yourself then you can get runs on it."
Middlesex seamer James Harris:
"It was a tough day for us. Dropping a few chances, as we did on Monday, hurt us and Somerset getting 230 hurt us. Then we had that horrible time to bat last night and it was difficult.
"The ball was spinning and Somerset bowled very nicely and made it hard work for us.
"We took a positive approach and tried to get our runs when we could against some very good balls, many of which you couldn't really hit.
"Maybe the pitch has slowed down a little bit, but it was biting quite sharply and this afternoon James Hildreth and Tom Abell have shown that you can take your time a bit more."
